Salony: Stylish, Casual Barbershop in Zamalek

Amidst the countless number of local barbershops in Cairo, the city is definitely lacking in higher end establishments catering to that select niche of image conscious, male clientele that is rife in Egypt these days.

With experienced barbers from the renowned Mohamed El Sagheer, Salony is a newly established barber shop situated opposite Zamalek’s Flamenco Hotel.

The spacious shop space boasts an impressive interior design, with a simplistic colour scheme of blacks, whites and greys. Tending to masculine grooming in style, there was also a jazz soundtrack playing to our day of treatment.

On first stepping into the shop, we were immediately greeted by a team of polite barbers who kindly offered us refreshments. We were shortly after directed to comfortable black seats – with washing basins attached – for a quick shampoo. Before commencing, the barber asked if we preferred warm or cold water for the wash and, a firm head massage later, we were clean and dried, ready for a cut. In front of the mirror, another friendly barber took over for the haircut, whilst pleasantly making typical barbershop small-talk.

When it came time to getting a clean shave, yet another barber arrived, who was courteous enough to allow us a few sips of tea and offering a smoke before beginning. Before long, our faces were covered in a thick layer of cream that was instantly shaved off. The barber was efficient, careful and managed to avoid shedding any blood – always a plus.

Having never done so in the past, we went ahead and committed to facial treatments. This included a face massage, steaming, lotion and a mud mask which left our faces embarrassingly soft. Rounding it up, we returned to the wash basins to wash off the mud and have our faces covered in a hot towel before our pores were closed with a rather severe splash of cold water.

The extended grooming session tallied up to 160LE, which is pricy, but given Salony’s location, chic décor and professional hospitality, the price was well worth the results. We recommend that every man in the city gives this place a try; neither you nor that special someone will be disappointed with the result.
