There’s a huge variety of cuisines on Cairo’s forever expanding dining scene, but still, one can’t resist the temptation of mouth-watering Egyptian food, which actually has a wider spectrum of dishes than its given credit for. One of the latest additions to Cairo’s list of restaurants that offer Egyptian food is Bharez in Mohandiseen.
Located in Atlas Hotel on Gamaat El Dowal Street, Bharez is easy to spot thanks to its eye-catching black sign with the name written in gold. Comprising two stories, the first floor is made for take-out orders, while the seating area is located on the second floor.
Perfect for huge gatherings, the seating area is spacious enough to secure privacy. There’s also a ‘family area’ that aims to capture the essence of family gatherings – it even has furniture with that classic gold-finish.
Shuffling through the simple and clear menu, we opted for Moza Mohamara (90LE), vine leaves (30LE), Rice with Chicken Tajeen (65LE) and Mombar (30LE).
The Moza Mohamara, which is a seared leg of lamb, was cooked to perfection; tender, juicy and well-seasoned, it was the highlight of our visit. Equally delicious were the plentiful vine leaves, whose portion can comfortably feed two people.
Not quite as good as the vine leaves, the Mombar, which is rice-stuffed intestines, lacked seasoning. However, the Rice with Chicken was outstanding; the chicken was juicy and the rice was perfectly cooked. Bharez also has a wide range of salads, from which we liked the pickled eggplants and the green salad.
Saving the best for last, we opted for Molokheyya (15LE), which we can call the best Molokheyya in town – second to mama’s, of course. It was well-seasoned and had a perfect consistency.
All in all, Bharez managed to impress us in every way possible. From their lip-smacking dishes to their friendly and efficient service, it’s obvious that Bharez knows how to please the inner Egyptian within all of us.
