Tutti Matti: An ‘Almost’ Perfect Italian Affair

Good Italian restaurants are hard to find, especially with an ever-growing slew of restaurants opening up almost daily in Cairo. Point 90 Mall is no exception with many venues spreading across several cuisines; however, Tutti Matti stands out with a distinctly Italian vibe and an outdoor area boasting a simplistic design and the smell of oregano and rosemary pulling people in.

As we took our seats on their wooden chairs, we opted for the Crema Zuppa Di Pollo (39LE) to start with, as well as the Fettuccine Alfredo Con Pollo (75LE), the Angus Beef Fillet (189LE) and large Frutti di Mare Pizza (95LE) as our main dishes.

After a fifteen minute wait, pizza-like bread arrived on a wooden serving tray alongside some butter and the Crema Zuppa Di Pollo.

Each half of the welcome bread was made with a different topping; one only had thyme on it while the other had a mix of thyme and salsa. The bread had a pizza like texture giving it a subtle flavour alongside the overwhelming thyme, while the other salsa-covered half the salsa offered even more flavour making it the favorable of the two.

The Crema Zuppa Di Pollo was chicken cream soup, however it had a watered down texture and had too much oil in it that it was visibly seen floating on its surface. As for the taste, it was bland and needed a bit more kick to it while the chicken pieces didn’t add much in terms of flavour.

Another fifteen to twenty minutes later, our main dishes arrived; the Frutti di Mare pizza was served on a circular wooden tray, the Fettuccine Alfredo Con Pollo in a large white plate and the Angus Beef Fillet along with our requested sides of mashed potatoes and wedges.

The pizza had a traditional thin crust topped which was mozzarella and tomato sauce with slices of onions, calamari, small shrimp and oregano. The crust had an almost crunchy texture to it, though the oregano overpowered everything, including the shrimp and calamari.

Wanting to change things up a little, we ordered Fettuccine Alfredo Con Pollo to be made with rigatoni pasta. It was drenched in white Alfredo sauce mixed with mushrooms and pieces of chicken, but was a bit bland and needed some salt and that the dish needed a bit more mixing, as we felt that the sauce sunk to the bottom very quickly.

Coming as one medium sized piece, the Angus fillet was topped with mushroom slices and sauce in a large plate, with two smaller bowls filled with mashed potatoes and potato wedges. The presentation of the Angus beef could have been better as the medium sized piece made the large plate feel empty.

The fillet had a smoky, earthy taste to it which worked well the slightly salty mushroom sauce. The mashed potatoes on the other hand were bland, lumpy and dry and could have been enhanced if it had its own sauce, while the potato wedges had a herby flavour which was made even better with the sprinkled spices.

We finished things off with a Cheesecake (39LE) that boasted a smooth creamy cheese full of flavor, which worked perfectly with the slight sourness of the strawberry sauce topping and a crunchy crust had us racing for our next bite.

In the end our experience at Tutti Matti was a great one although there were a few setbacks that held the restaurant back from showing its full potential , we think that on any other day we would had one of the best experiences in new Cairo.

In the end, our experience at Tutti Matti was a good one, with the setbacks holding it back from being a truly great one. While there was indeed several thoughts without, the restaurant shows signs that it could be one of the best Italian eateries in the city.

360 Tip

The restaurant also serves shisha.

Best Bit

Good variety and, surprisingly, the cheesecake was the star of the show.

Worst Bit

Lots of little missteps ruined what could have been a great dining experience.
