Gourmet Egypt: Gourmet Meats, Fish and Cheese in Cairo

If you know your way around a steak and
like to think of yourself as a budding chef or food connoisseur, chances are
you’ve already come across Gourmet Egypt. If you haven’t yet, you really
should: this gourmet and imported food company offers high-quality meat,
seafood, cheese and condiments for moderate prices.   Aside from its website, Gourmet Egypt has two
branches; one next to Maadi Carrefour and the other in Dandy Mall.

Gourmet Egypt’s Dandy Mall branch is
sufficiently packed with everything you could possibly need on a gourmet
shopping expedition. Located in front of Carrefour Supermarket on the mall’s
ground floor, the shop is impeccably clean with shining ceramic tiles and large
fridges stocking meats, fish and other delicacies.

Grab one of the nifty green shopping
trolleys and take your time browsing; there’s a lot on offer. To your right,
the fridges display bags of potato wedges (20LE), potato crosscuts (20LE) and
Little Vili’s Australian meat pies (19LE for a small). Further on, you’ll find
a counter displaying French, Italian and other cheeses that will make any
cheese fanatic well up in tears.

You can find interesting cheeses like Dutch
Edam with herbs or hot pepper (10.5LE for 0.125kg), Dutch Gouda with cumin or
mustard (9LE to 11LE for a 0.125kg), and French Buche de Chèvre, Brie, Italian
Caciocavallo Silano (28.75LE), and Italian Pecorino with Truffle (31.25LE for
0.125kg).   At 22.5LE, the Parmiggiano
Reggiano is well-priced and of higher quality than the brands sold at Cairo
supermarkets.

The back of the shop is dedicated to a meat
counter and display fridge, where you can either pick up a tray of ready cut
beef, or ask a staff member to cut a piece as per your specifications. If
you’re on a budget, the trays of beef stroganoff strips (44.5LE) are ideal to
stock up on, as are the beef cubes (44.5LE) and chilled sausages (40.05LE):
Gourmet Egypt stocks Egyptian, Mexican and Merguez sausages, but our preference
goes to the latter for its subtle spiciness. Equally worth buying is the tray
of beef burgers (24.92LE) or the beef petite fillet steak (59.8LE for a 200gm
tray of 2 steaks). Gourmet Egypt also stocks lamb (leg, neck and mince) and New
Zealand baby veal shanks as well as Australian veal osso bucco (85LE).

Aside from its meats, its seafood
collection on the left side is equally impressive, including Norwegian salmon
steaks, butterfly shrimp (65LE), New Zealand green lip mussels (53LE) and
oysters (95LE) as well as scallops. The salmon is definitely one of the shop’s highlights;
available smoked, sushi-grade, whole with its head on and gutted, or in small
steak portions (59LE for two).

If none of this has managed to tickle your
fancy, the shop also sells Italian balsamic vinegar and virgin olive oil, dried
shitake mushrooms and risotto, hoisin sauce, English mustard, black truffle
oil, frozen blueberries, foie gras, rock salt, and spice and condiment brands
such as NoMu, Mama Africa, Kees and Sacia. The shop also stocks everything you
could need to prepare sushi, from seafood to pickled ginger and the sushi-grade
fish.

Head to Gourmet Egypt for its high-quality
meats and seafood as well as gourmet condiments and cheese that are rarely
found elsewhere in Cairo. While its prices may be higher than certain
supermarkets, they’re not that higher when you compare the quality and quantity
that you receive.

360 Tip

Gourmet Egypt’s website offers same-day deliver to Cairo, as well as weekend delivery to Alexandria, Ein Sokhna and Hurghada.

Best Bit

Gourmet food heaven: excellent steaks, Norwegian salmon, great spices and delicious cheese.

Worst Bit

Prices may be high, and the shop is not always fully stocked.
