The Pink Powder Room: Luxurious Loungewear in Cairo

Imagine you are walking around the neighbourhood of Zamalek; it’s a hot, sunny day, and you feel like having ice cream from Mandarine Koueider. Then you catch sight of a window full of intense colours. Forget your ice cream, cross the road, and you will be right in front of The Pink Powder Room.

The window display is simply but imaginatively designed with its pink-and-white curtains. On a fuchsia background, several coloured clothes hangers are arranged into lines between two mannequins dressed in green, yellow, grey and violet; a great indication of what to expect inside the shop.

The Pink Powder Shop opened in Zamalek in the summer of 2009. The designers’ philosophy is to create comfy yet luxurious dresses, nightwear and lingerie as well as lounge wear. Apart from a few designs that use flower prints and lace, the brand’s collection consists of simple cotton clothing in block and often bold colours. The fabric is often a blend of Lycra and cotton, making the clothes light, breathable and practical in the heavy Cairo heat. Classic t-shirts (50LE for a short-sleeved, 80LE for a long-sleeved) have a pink hem; the brand’s signature colour.

A small number of t-shirts come with uplifting slogans, such as ‘Inspire Me’ (120LE) or ‘I Believe in Love’. You also have other options: a t-shirt with a peace sign on the shoulder (150LE), a kaf Fatma (150LE) or ‘Love Peace Egypt’ (110LE) on the front. Long, loose shrugs in white and nudes are perfect summer cardigans, while the long-sleeved, waist-cinched beige shirt (250LE) is a chic way to stay covered up and cool in the heat. Long racerback dresses are also available, as are racerback tank tops.

On your left, a rack carries the various t-shirt designs including loose shirts (160LE to 180LE depending on the model), and robes (150LE). On your right, another rack carries pyjamas, camisole sets and leggings (90LE to 250LE), which you can find in a variety of colours and either in plain fabric or with print or lace detail. The plain black leggings with a fold-over waistband (90LE) are great for pilates or yoga workouts. Leggings are available in black, grey, electric blue and red, or if you’re feeling adventurous, canary yellow.

A small selection of lingerie is laid out on a table in the centre. At 25LE, cotton slips with a kaf Fatma print are a great idea for a gift (25LE). If you want something more sophisticated, you can choose between simple lace slips (30LE) or lace culottes (55LE).

The cosy shop’s atmosphere is quiet and relaxing, and the staff members are usually helpful and kind. The dressing rooms are separated by large fuchsia curtains and come with quaint little cushioned Louis XVI chairs; a nice touch to this very feminine shop.

The Pink Powder Room is a great option for light clothing in trendy colours and comfortable styles. Some lounge clothes are so alluring, you’ll find yourself wearing them outdoors as well.
