In that spirit, here is a list of the best films based on some impeccable works of literature that you can catch on this lazy Saturday morning.

The Danish Girl (2015)

The Hours (2002)

This film follows three women from different generations who were affected by Virginia Woolf’s writing. The time periods range from the 1920s, 1950s, and the early 2000s, and Woolf herself is even included. With legendary actresses like Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman, the star power coupled with rich and complex female characters makes for a satisfying viewing experience.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

This coming of age story focuses on Charlie and his experiences in high school as he struggles with mental health and forming meaningful relationships. The Fault in our Stars (2014)

As if John Green’s novel wasn’t heart wrenching enough, this movie is just what you need if you’re in the mood for an emotional release. Hazel Grace, a terminally ill cancer patient’s life is changed when she meets Augustus Waters in a group therapy session. As their romance expands, so does Hazel’s views on life and death. Just a warning: make sure you have a box of tissues ready, Okay? Okay.

Gone Girl (2014)

When Nick Dunne’s wife goes missing, he is caught at the centre of a police and media frenzy, eventually becoming a suspect himself. This critically acclaimed drama is jam-packed with mystery and intrigue, making you question the protagonist himself.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

This psychological thriller starring Rooney Mara as the fierce female lead tells the story of a skilled hacker assisting with the search for a woman who went missing over 40 years ago.

The Godfather (1972)

Francis Ford Coppola’s cinematic masterpiece is often referred to as one of the best films of all time. This mob drama featuring memorable performances from Marlon Brando and Al Pacino is a must-see for everyone at least once (or several times) in their life.

However, this modern-day version of the classic romance uses only the dialogue from the original work. The old Shakespearean language contrasted by the 90s fashion and music makes for nothing short of a masterpiece.

Clueless (1995)

As if! You may not know this, but this classic 90s rom-com is actually based on Jane Austen’s Emma! Although pretty loosely adapted, the character of Cher Horowitz is meant to portray the protagonist Emma herself. Clueless will continue to stand the test of time as the best slumber party movie. Ever.
