The European Film Panorama in Cairo Celebrates its 16th edition this weekend, starting from the 11th of January to the 20th, with a selection of contemporary European films. The festival aims to promote cultural exchange and appreciation of European cinema in Egypt. The European Film Panorama usually includes both mainstream and independent productions and covers a wide array of genres, offering a comprehensive view of European cinema. The festival provides a platform for Egyptian audiences to engage in discussions and interactions with local filmmakers, critics, and cinephiles, as well as an opportunity to explore Europe’s rich and diverse cinematic traditions.

Launched in 2004, the Panorama has attracted an increasing number of spectators due to the quality and uncensored nature of films and the rich exchanges and debates with international guests. The event focuses on award-winning feature and documentary productions already featured in major film festivals.

This year, the festival runs simultaneously in Zawya Cinema (Downtown Cairo), Zamalek Cinema, and Point 90, and Arkan cinemas, with screenings in Alexandria and Minya in the Jesuits Centres. There will be eight categories: Character Action, Ruptured Youth, Visceral Attractions, Raw Materials, Invisible World, Politics of Sociality, Family, and Aki Kaurismaki Retrospective.

In addition to film screenings, the European Film Panorama often includes workshops, panel discussions, and special events aiming to deepen the understanding and appreciation of European cinema. The European Film Panorama in Cairo serves as an important cultural bridge between Europe and Egypt, fostering cross-cultural understanding and promoting the art of filmmaking, offering a break from commercial movies.

You can find all the details through the event’s Facebook page.
