Happy anniversary! After gracing the stage with over 25 choreographed performances and collaborations that included world-class artists, MAAT for Contemporary Art is celebrating its 20th anniversary.  With a plethora of events ranging from dance performances to live music, parties, discussions and screenings, the celebrations will take place right in the heart of Cairo.

The two decades have included so many accomplishments by the dance company. Not only is MAAT recognised by the UNESCO International Dance Council, but it also birthed the first independent dance school in Africa and the Arab world; the Cairo Contemporary Dance Center (CCDC). Founded by artist and teacher, Karima Mansour, most of MAAT’s performances involve graduates of the full-time training program.

The festivities will run from the 8th to the 21st of December. The current students of MAAT|CCDC will lead The Platform’s four performances at AUC Falaki Theater that will run from the 8th to the 12th of December and tickets are on sale for 50 EGP. Also, you can visit the CCDC in Mohandessin for their open day activities from the 14th to the 21st by signing up here.

From the 15th to the 18th, and in collaboration with Cimatheque and Medrar for Contemporary Art, you can catch screenings highlighting some of MAAT|CCDC’s best performances. The series, titled Retrospective, is free of charge in Downtown Cairo. As for the talks, the free-entry roundtables edition will run from the 16th to the 18th, and will feature key figures from the dance scene at the German Cultural Center.

Find out more about the celebratory schedule on MAAT’s Facebook page.
