Where to Learn Sculpting in Cairo
written by
Nada Medhat

Sculpting is one of the oldest art forms in the world; in fact, most of the remaining art we have from ancient cultures, alongside pottery, is different forms of sculptures. Sculpting is often described as a highly satisfying art form by its practitioners. It also serves a significant role in many religious rituals around the world.

If you’re interested but have no idea where to start learning and practising it in Cairo, then this guide is for you!

Soma Art School and Gallery

This Zamalek-based art space offers extensive educational programs in visual arts that revolve around art history and development, as well as delving into modern art generally and contemporary Egyptian art in particular. The team offers wide-ranging courses like painting, drawing, crafting, storytelling and, most importantly for our list, sculpting.

You can find out more about the art space on its Facebook page here

Place Des Arts

Place Des Arts is an art education centre in Maadi that aims to provide and facilitate artistic, cultural, and educational growth with specific workshops, classes, and activities that range widely across the art genre. The Place has a wide variety of classes such as painting, music, photography, film-making, digital art, handicrafts, writing, as well as pottery and sculpture. It also has its own music store and intellectual-style coffee shop too.

Art Café-Egypt

Also in Maadi, Art Café-Egypt describes itself as not just a place for teaching and learning, but also a place of tranquillity and inspiration that can act as an artistic getaway where you can go to try whatever your hands desire. But other than this, the team offers an extensive list of courses and workshops in visual and applied arts. Painting, Arabic calligraphy, glass work, and mosaic are examples of the courses you can find there. Sculpture also takes its place among the offers, whether it be clay sculpting or something else.

Galileo Art Center

Galileo Center for Arts in Nasr City is a decade-old establishment in Egypt. The founder, Mohamed Abdelgalil, has over 27 years of experience as an artist, all of which he brought to the centre. Abdelgalil and his team offer an extensive list of courses that includes nearly all art forms. For sculpture, they offer advanced courses (but don’t worry, no prior knowledge is required). The centre is also accredited by IAAMC (International Academy of Arts, Media & Creativity).

Darb 1718

Darb 1718 is an Egyptian non-profit organisation founded more than a decade ago in Old Cairo. Its facilities include a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces that host different art mediums and cultural events, including exhibition spaces, theatre, dance and concert stages, outdoor cinema for independent film screenings, gardens and rooftops, in addition to an artist residency to accommodate international artists and curators. But most importantly, it offers a variety of workshops and courses that occasionally include sculpture.
