Dutch Delights: Authentic Stroopwafels & Poffertjes

Although the food of the Netherlands is quite basic and sometimes even a little bit strange (who uses so much mayonnaise on fries??), the Dutch are also known for their mouth-watering stroopwafels, which is why we headed over to Dutch Delights as soon as we got wind of it.

Temporarily located at Arkan Plaza in Sheikh Zayed at the time of our visit, Dutch Delights is a bicycle-powered mobile bakery. With an eye-catching blue and orange rooftop, the waiters’ rather cool uniform and the adorable packaging of the products, Dutch Delights’ overall look is cute, but ever so dangerously tempting.

The stroopwafels are offered in different sizes, while poffertjes are also on the menu. And if you’re not familiar with poffertjes, they are essentially mini Dutch pancakes, whose batter is made with yeast and buckwheat, giving them a unique texture. While the place offers a variety of toppings including Nutella and fruits, we opted for the classic poffertjes (30LE) as recommended by the staff.

Topped with melted butter and powdered sugar, ten pieces of pofferjes were served on a mini carton plate. While the exquisitely-spongy dough was all puffy and fluffy, the powdered sugar wasn’t well sifted and was lumpy. Generally, the pofferjes would have fared a lot better, had it been served with a piece of soft butter.

We also took a pack of eight medium-sized stroopwafels (60LE) to-go; each one had that perfect chewy and stretchy texture we were looking for, but the best part is that it wasn’t overly sweet and didn’t have that artificial after taste you get from supermarket versions.

We also tried mini-sized stroopwafels (30LE) which had strawberry syrup-stuffed marshmallows, which are a little bit tough. However, if you heat the marshmallows and smash it between two stroopwafels, you can create a surprisingly delicious Dutch version of S’mores.

All in all, Dutch Delights’ potterjes and stroopwafels are the best you’ll find in Cairo. There’s a homemade feel to every bite and the overall set-up of the cart and the packaging is cute, but the prices are a little steep.

360 Tip

Dutch Delights will be at Arkan Plaza till January 15th and you can keep up-to-date on future locations via Instagram and Facebook.

Best Bit

Perfectly executed potterjes and stroopwafels.

Worst Bit

It's kind of expensive.
