Considered a traditional Latin American moist, spongy dessert, Tres Leches is a cake that one is bound to find in a South-American restaurant. Of course, its popularity was well established worldwide decades ago, but it only landed in Cairo a few years back in high-end restaurants. Like all Ramadan fads, Egyptians couldn’t leave this creamy, fluffy cake alone and ultimately brought it to the Ramadan dessert race.

Interestingly enough, there is a lot of debate about the origins of Tres Leches Cake – some arguing it is also prevalent in Nicaraguan cuisine. But, we will settle with what’s widely known about it, which is its Mexican roots. Tres leches translates to “three milk” cake which is a relatively straightforward explanation of what it is actually made of. Even though there are many variations, the basic recipe features a light sponge layer steeped in three different kinds of milk: evaporated, condensed, and heavy cream or whole milk. This heavenly mix creates a tasty, delicious, and melt-in-your-mouth dessert that we all know and love.

With the Egyptians’ ever-lasting love for anything sweet, creamy, and dense during Ramadan – dessert shops decided to play around with the original recipe and feature it as a creative option this year. If you’re feeling a bit curious to try it in the last few days of Ramadan, here are a few places you can find them.

The Four Fat Ladies

This year, amongst their distinctive selection of desserts, you can find Honey Comb Tres Leches and Lotus Tres Leches on their Ramadan menu. The light sponge cake is soaked in milk mixture then topped with cream and crunchy honeycomb bits or Lotus. You can find this tempting dessert in their Maadi and Korba branches – or call 16679 for deliveries.

Salé Sucré Pâtisserie

With more than 54 stores in Egypt, UAE, and Kuwait – Sale Sucre is undoubtedly catering to the Arab palette and brought us its version of Tres Leches this Ramadan. This moist cake got an exciting makeover from this famous patisserie – their version features meringue and heavy cream with a base of Rawani Cake. This Yemeni semolina cake, known as “Rawani”, is also very fluffy and spongy- making it the best Middle Eastern twist to this Mexican dessert.

KB’s Cake Studio

Have you ever heard of The Baked Alaska Cake? If you haven’t, then KB’s Cake Studio got you covered! This delivery-based dessert service perfected the art of alterations and mixed a few techniques together to bring us this new invention this Ramadan. They created a Tres Leches Icecream cake that is essentially a moist milky cake topped with mango ice cream and coated with fresh torched meringue – no more words needed. You can call 01111006255 to try it out now!

TBS

Every Ramadan, TBS brings us a new mouth-watering, sugar-drunk creation that we fall in love with. This year, they’ve outdone themselves with the Tresut; a milk-soaked sponge cake with Lotus, Nutella or Dates – topped with Kunafa croquants and nuts! The combination of the milk and sponge cake makes the dessert lighter, and cuts through the sweetness of the toppings; it’s a must-try! You can head over to any of TBS’s branches, or call them on 16679 and place your order.
