Cairo Weekend Guide: The Gypsy Jazz Project, Les Petits Chats, Islam Chipsy & More

The Weekend finally returns and along comes a huge bundle of music events that are sure to stretch a smile on everyone’s face, until the next weekend. Here what’s happening in Cairo in the upcoming few days:

While Thursday is all about folk music at Downtown’s Dammah Theatre, where Rango take to the stage to play some mystical Sudanese tunes, it’s a jazz night at Garden City’s ROOM Art Space with The Gypsy Jazz Project taking to the stage and at Maadi’s Madaar too, where local band, The Eclectric Quartet, take to the stage.

More jazz tunes follow through the night at Cairo Jazz Club, where jazz master and drummer, Yehia Khalil, takes to the stage, while Kempinski’s Jazz Bar welcomes the trio, Amy Frega, Rami Attallah and Ehab Badr.

Meanwhile, The Tap East welcomes one of the best female DJs in town, Akladios, who takes to decks for a round of electronic tunes, The Tap Maadi starts the weekend with another version of Pop Till You Drop, where DJ Mobbz takes to decks, while Bus Stop’s hosts a night of r&b and hip-hop, courtesy of DJ Medoz, in Urban Development.

Friday sees a variety of local bands taking to the stage at various venues across the city; Black Theama play a round of Arabic contemporary songs at El Sawy Culturewheel’s River Hall, as El Selem and Ousso Band come together to play the same genre, but at Madaar, while legendery Les Petits Chats  cover some classic love songs in a night called Chansons D’Amour at Cairo Opera House’s Main Hall.

Diving deeper into the night, rock band, Bluezophrenia, take to the stage of The Tap East, before DJ Teddy takes over, Basheer takes to that of Underground for a night of Nubian-inspired music, while The Tap Maadi hosts a special Latin night that sees international band, Llego La Banda, which gathers a host of musicians from various places around the world.

Saturday brings more music to town, with local band, HotMess, take to the stage of Madaar, to cover some blues/rock hits with an experimental twist, while Italian guitarist, Maurizio Abate, Lebanese duo, Praed and local musician, Maurice Louca, take to the stage of ROOM Art Space for a special improv gig.

On the other side of the musical spectrum, Electro-Shaabi DJ, Islam Chipsy , is the star of Cairo Jazz Club’s Saturday L’Oriental, while DJ Seif Sallam takes to the decks of Bus Stop’s Hits Mania, to deliver some mainstream hits. The Taps are wrapping the weekend up with an Open Jam Night in Maadi’s, while New Cairo’s sees a night of blues, rock and jazz, with local band, Bluenotes, take to the stage.
