10 Film Sequels You Didn’t Know Were Being Made

10 Film Sequels You Didn’t Know Were Being Made

The concept of the film sequel is staple part of modern film culture, but it still strikes a nerve for the kind of film fanatics that will tell you that no sequel is ever better than the original. While the film world is being dominated by superhero movies and comic book adaptations in 2016, there’s a lot more hustle and bustle behind the scenes in Hollyqood than meets the eye, with the next few years set to see a roll-out of sequels that many thought would never be made – or in some cases, sequels many wished would never be made.

From Mary Poppins and Bridget Jones, to Toy Story and Top Gun, this is a list of ten sequels that seemingly came out of nowhere.

1. Marry Poppins 2

The 1964 Oscar winning musical fantasy film starring the iconic Julie Andrews is actually set to have a sequel and we cannot wait to see how it’s going to turn out.

Produced over twenty years after the original, the movie will feature an entirely new cast – with Emily Blunt starring as Mary Poppins— and continues the titular character’s adventures with the Banks family.

“The film will work from the other books altogether without touching the iconic brilliance of Mary Poppins,” Rob Marshall, the film’s director said.

2. Godzilla vs King Kong

While Captain America: Civil War has been touted as a battle for the ages this year, rumour has it that Godzilla and King Kong are set to have an epic battle of their own.

If it all goes as planned with, 2020 will be the year that sees two of the biggest and most iconic movie monsters will collide. But that’s not all. Before the promised Godzilla VS King Kong, King Kong is coming back to the big screen in 2017, in the sequel Kong: Skull Island, followed by Godzilla 2 released in 2018, which will pave the way for the crossover.

This isn’t the first time this epic clash hit the big screen; the two characters came together in a 1963 Japanese movie.

3. Top Gun 2

I feel the need…the need for speed. The movie that ‘made’ Tom Cruise, Top Gun, is back and we’re not ashamed to admit that we’re very excited about it. Set to hit theatres in 2018, Cruise and Val Kilmer are reprising their roles as Maverick and as Iceman – something that has helped convinced naysayers to reserve judgement. It’s already been dismissed as a money-making, corny blockbuster, but we’re being more positive about the whole thing.

4. Gremlins 3

Rumour has it that Gremlins 3 will be a belated sequel not a reboot only nothing has been confirmed yet about the making of the movie. The 52 year old Zach Galligan who played the role of Billy Peltzer, however, mentioned that if Gremlins 3 were to happen, the events of the film will take place 30 years later.

Though little information has been confirmed, Gremlins 3 is rumoured to be a belated sequel, rather than a reboot of the franchise as was initially reported. Actor Zach Galligan, who played the role of Billy Peltzer in the originals, has revealed that the events of the film will try to follow on from Gremlins 2, but thirty years later, though Gremlins writer, Chris Columbus, has thrown more ambiguity into the pot with his remarks.

“We were approached with an idea that really sounded like an interesting version. It's not a remake of the movie at all. It's just a reinvention of it.”

5. Chucky 7

Don Mancini, the writer and creator of all Chucky movies, has confirmed that a seventh film is on its way, with Chucky’s crazy ex-girlfriend, Tiffany, said to be making a return.“The film will hold some surprising events in its plot,” Manacini has said of the film, which is pencilled for release in 2017.

6. Toy story 4

Although the plot seemingly tied up all of its loose ends with the Toy Story 3, the world’s favourite talking, living toys are set to return in June 2008 in Toy Story 4. Though fans have been quick to voice their concerns that a fourth film will tarnish the series, Pixar are promising big things and director, John Lasseter, is confident that fans will be please.

“We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before.”

7. MIB 23

In possibly the most peculiar film on this list, MIB 23 is fusing the worlds of Men in Black and 22/23 Jump Street – true story. Though Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones won’t reprising their roles, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, are on board for what is surely one of the most random cross-over movies to date.

8. High School Musical 4

Having launched the likes of Zac Effron and Vanessa Hudgens into the limelight, as well as inspiring popular TV show, Glee, High School Musical was certainly a divisive series that many thought was over and done with – but over nine years later, Disney has confirmed that the teen-musical  will return.

There’s been plenty of talk about the possibility of Effron and co. starring in some way, but as of now, Disney is on the hunt for a new core cast.

9. Bridget Jones’s Baby

The epic romantic comedy between Bridget Jones and Mark Darcy, is to be resurrected, only this time, Hugh Grant has been replaced by Patrick ‘McDreamy’ Dempsey in the love triangle.

Set to be released in September 2016, reactions to the trailer haven;t been all that positive, with many keen to point out that Bridget as a character doesn’t seem to have matured or changed one bit since the last movie; but we happen to think that’s part of her charm.

10. Space Jam 2

Set to be released sometime in 2017- 21 years after the original – Warner Bros announced a sequel of the 1996’s Space Jam. It has been suggested that NBA giant, LeBron James, will step into Michale Jordan’s big shoes, but either way, we can hardly wait to see the goofy Loony Tunes characters causing mayhem once more.
