This week Cairo’s cinemas see the release of two new sequels. The blockbuster Pacific Rim: Uprising, the follow-up to Guillermo Del Toro’s massive hit, as well as the release of the chilling horror sequel The Strangers: Prey At Night. Lastly, the star-studded animated feature Sherlock Gnomes is to hit theaters.

 Pacific Rim: Uprising

What’s it about? The long awaited sequel to Guillermo Del Toro’s 2013 film, sees the son of character Marshal Pentecost, replacing his father as a Jaegar Pilot. The young Jaegar Pilot then proceeds to form an alliance with other pilots, in order to defend the world as it becomes over run by the Kaiju monsters .

The good: The first film was a massive success at the box office; so, it’s pretty much guaranteed that the sequel will be a hit.  Steven D. Knight, takes over directorial duties from Guillermo Del Toro; D. Knight has the first season of Daredevil under his belt, so we expect great things.

The bad: The first film didn’t have much going for it, except for its action sequences and stunning visuals. It’s hard to say that the sequel will be any different.

Strangers: Prey at Night

What’s it about?: The sequel to the chilling horror film, which was released 10 years ago, sees a new family living at a secluded home, and being hunted, stalked, and preyed upon by a family of psychopaths.

The good: The first film was regarded as one of the creepiest horror films ever released, for it’s extremely realistic depiction of real incidents that have similarly occurred. Should the sequel carry along the same creepy tone and build on it, this film would be a worthy successor.

The bad: Horror sequels are rarely as good as the original.

Sherlock Gnomes

What’s it about?: Gnomeo and Juliet recruit detective Sherlock Gnomes to investigate the disappearance of the rest of their garden Gnomes.

The good: An incredibly star-studded cast, the voice cast for this film includes Johnny Depp, Emily Blunt, James McAvoy and even Sir Michael Caine.

The bad: This is no Pixar film, and there doesn’t seem to be any semblance of a plot. Unlike Disney films, this film will mostly just cater to a younger audience.
