It’s a thrilling week this time around in Cairo Cinemas. Josh Brolin, who rose to fame as Thanos in the last entry of the Avengers franchise, is back with two movies: the Sicario sequel, and the highly anticipated Deadpool sequel with Ryan Reynolds. On the other hand, you could go for a more dramatic movie and watch Adrift, starring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado

What’s it about? This is the sequel to Sicario, a movie starring Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benecio Del Toro. This time around, Sicario returns without Blunt and without director Denis Villeneuve who was replaced by Stefano Sollima. Written by the same writer, Taylor Sheridan, Sicario: Day of the Soldado follows the story of the drug war on the US-Mexico border after the cartels added terrorists to the equation.

The good: Josh Brolin has been blowing up recently, especially after his hugely successful role as Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Joining him is Benecio Del Toro, an academy-award winner who was brilliant in the first movie, and is set to reprise his performance in this one.

The bad: While director Stefano Sollima has a lot of experience in leading different action productions, this one is his first blockbuster in the U.S., while former director Denis Villeneuve has a few respectable caps in this arena. Adding to that, Emily Blunt is missing from the movie, which takes away a whole lot of star power from the film.

Adrift

What’s it about? Based on a true story, the movie talks about a couple that meet in Tahiti, and are set to embark on a journey through the ocean. Sam Clafin, the star of Me Before You, and Shailene Woodley, star of The Fault in Our Stars play a couple that face all sorts of challenges in their struggle for survival.

The good: Adrift seems to have everything: drama, a thrill, and romance. It’s filled with stunning scenes that are set to have you on the edge of your seat. Not to mention director Baltasar Kormákur’s experience in sea and ocean related movies.

The bad: While the film seems to be set for success on paper, in reality things may go differently. You see, the idea of a struggle for survival with water’s demons is by no means a new one. Most of the movie is set to revolve around that struggle, and the parts following up to that incident may be quite boring.

Deadpool 2

What’s it about? Deadpool is about the famous marvel character, Wade Wilson, who undergoes a set of excruciating experiments – after being diagnosed with cancer- that cure him and turn him into a superhero with a disfigured face. The foul-mouthed mutant is played by Ryan Reynolds. In the sequel, Deadpool sets out to gather a team of fellow mutants in order to protect a supernatural boy hunted down by Cable (Josh Brolin).

The good: Deadpool has garnered unimaginable success and sky-high ratings. This sequel is accordingly expected to be great.

The bad: Sequels, and especially with superhero movies, are rarely as successful as their predecessors, and the problem with Deadpool is that its success hugely relied on it being a whole new view on superhero movies entirely. This one is about a foul-mouthed anti-hero that repeatedly breaks the fourth wall. The element of surprise is definitely lost in the sequel, and it will be a huge challenge for Reynolds to present something unique to the audience.
