After a week full of Arabic movies, now comes the time for Hollywood to make its way back to Egyptian theatres. It seems we’re only warming up this week as only three movies have been released. We have two horror movies, Slender Man and Down a Dark Hall, plus an R-rated action flick starring Mark Wahlberg, Mile 22. So without further a do, let us proceed.

Slender Man

What’s it about? The idea of Slender Man has surfaced every once in a while in American pop culture, and has made its way internationally through social media. It has been referenced in many games as well as having its own set of games. The movie builds on that iconic character, and the journey of a group of friends in a small town in Massachusetts as they attempt to prove that he doesn’t exist.

The good: Slender Man already has a lot of popularity as a character, and building on that, the movie may already have a respectable amount of anticipation. It attempts to make a real story out of the character, and is written by David Birke who’s well-versed in horror movies, as well as Victor Surge who’s already written a number of productions on Slender Man.

The bad: While the character may have a big reputation in Internet memes, director Sylvain White, and both writers are not highly reputable in Hollywood.

Down a Dark Hall

What’s it about? The movie talks about the life of students at the elite Blackwood Boarding School, and the new student, Kit Gordy (played by AnnaSophia Robb), who is curious about the supernatural incidents she notices in the school, only to find herself trapped in a menacing, devilish building with danger lurking in every corner. The film also stars Uma Thurman as Madame Duret.

The good: Director Rodrigo Cortés is at the helm of this movie, and his previous experiences in directing movies such as Red Lights starring Robert De Niro and Buried starring Ryan Reynolds should come in handy here. Uma Thurman’s involvement should also spell promising things for the movie, and preliminary ratings are not bad at all.

The bad: While it may not have received horrid reviews, they’re also not exactly great.

Mile 22

What’s it about? A huge assault is threatening the United States and a mysterious police officer is said to have crucial information. Mark Wahlberg, as James Silva, an American intelligence officer, is tasked along with a top-secret tactical unit to deliver that “package” to Mile 22. The movie also stars John Malkovic and women’s MMA star, Ronda Rousey.

The good: Mark Wahlberg is a top-notch star when it comes to action movies, and being an R-rated film, the filmmakers will have the freedom to make this a gritty and action-packed film. Director Peter Berg has been at the helm of big productions such as Hancock and Battleship, he’s also worked with Mark Wahlberg on Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon.

The bad: While Mark Wahlberg is a household name, his past few movies haven’t garnered huge success at the box office, and the same can be said about Director Peter Berg.
