It’s Wednesday, you know what that means, it’s time for our weekly edition of New in Cairo Cinemas. This week in Cairo’s cinemas sees three films. For starters, there’s the romantic-comedy Crazy Rich Asians, then – for those looking for something a bit more on the thrilling side – there is crime drama film King of Thieves. Finally, if you are in the mood for something suitable for Hallowe’en season, well we are happy to announce that the iconic horror film franchise Halloween is back with a brand-new film.

Crazy Rich Asians

What’s it about? Based on the international best-selling novel of the same name, the film follows New Yorker Rachel, as she accompanies her boyfriend Nick on a trip to his hometown of Singapore in order to meet his family. Rachel not only discovers that Nick’s family is incredibly wealthy, but she also discovers that she might not be the ideal fit for Nick’s life and family.

The good: Who doesn’t love a great romance, especially one that has received such amazing reviews? Moreover, the all-Asian cast works to dismantle some of the film industry’s racism.

The bad: At its heart, this film seems to be a Cinderella story, and therefore quite cliché.

King of Thieves

What’s it about? Based on infamous true events, the film follows a group of retired criminals who pull off a major heist in London’s jewellery district. However, things take a dark turn when greed starts to become part of the equation.

The good: The film stars Academy Award Winners Michael Cain and Jim Broadbent, is directed by James Marsh who is most known for directing The Theory of Everything (2014). As such, we expect this film to be incredible in every regard.

The bad: Films that are based on true events tend to either completely fail or garner incredible success. Preliminary reviews have indicated that this film, unfortunately, belongs to the former group.

Halloween

What’s it about? Laurie Strode finally comes to confront Michael Myers, after four long decades.

The good: This film franchise is simply iconic in the horror genre, making it an ideal watch for Hallowe’en season.

The bad: How many movies can they really make out of a story of a deranged killer chasing after a single woman before audiences are board?
