This week’s new film releases look intense! For some heart-wrenching family drama, we have Ben Is Back. If you’re more in the mood for a biopic centred on a fearless female journalist, then A Private War would probably satisfy your craving. Last but certainly not least, if you’re a fan of fantasy, adventure, and science fiction, Mortal Engines would make for a super fun viewing experience.

Ben Is Back

What’s it about? Ben Burns (Lucas Hedges), a young man struggling with drug addiction, surprises his family by returning home for Christmas Eve. His mother, Holly (Julia Roberts), welcomes her son but soon realises he is still in a great deal of danger, and has to do all that she can to keep her family from falling apart.

The good: Lucas Hedges is an up and coming actor who was recently nominated for an academy award, and Julia Roberts is an academy award winner herself. The movie promises moving performances.

The bad: Since the film deals with the topic of addiction, it can be extremely emotionally taxing and may be difficult to watch for those who have struggled with this, or have loved ones who have.

A Private War

What’s it about? This film tells the true story of Marie Colvin, one of the world’s most celebrated war correspondents, and her passion for documenting the true costs of war and giving a voice to those affected. A fearless spirit, she constantly puts her life in danger in order to pursue this passion, and the film depicts the most dangerous mission she would ever embark upon.

The good: It tells the story of an important and powerful female figure, and also has great reviews!

The bad: Some critics have claimed that they were disappointed with the portrayal of Colvin in this film, and that it missed the mark on some of her most significant characteristics.

Mortal Engines

What’s it about?  In this post-apocalyptic adventure film, Hester Shaw is the only one who can stop a monstrous city on wheels which destroys everything in its path. She, along with a group of outlaws and outcasts, embark on a whirlwind journey.

The good: So far, the film has good ratings, and if you like fantasy, sci-fi, or anything steampunk, then this movie is sure to satisfy you.

The bad: Since it is an adaptation of a popular book series, there is the risk of the film not living up to the book. If you are a fan of this series, you may not be pleased with the way it has been adapted.
