New in Cairo Cinemas: What to Expect From This Week’s Top Film Releases

This week in Cairo Cinemas, we’re blessed with two potentially solid films, and two others that may prove to be quite pleasant surprises. If you’re looking for a comedy flick, check out Dwayne Johnson’s Fighting with My Family, or try your luck in the rom-com, Time Freak. Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Steve Carell team up and star in the highly anticipated movie, Vice, while a thriller awaits you in Escape Room.

Fighting with My Family

What’s it about? Dwayne Johnson is featured as himself, The Rock, as he meets a wrestling family with two kids trying to make it in the big stage of WWE. The film also features Nick Frost, Vince Vaughn, and the multi-talented Stephen Merchant, who wrote and directed the film.

The good: Delving into the wrestling world is always an exciting plot, especially when it features star power such as the hilarious Nick Frost and Vince Vaughn, plus, of course, one of the best wrestling champions, Dwayne – The Rock – Johnson. Preliminary ratings for this movie have been outstanding.

The bad: While the plot is seemingly solid, it still may fall prey to a few clichés. Additionally, being centred on wrestling is bound to turn off nonfans.

Vice

What’s it about? Vice tells the story of Vice-president Dick Cheney, it shows his road to this immensely powerful job, and how he made lasting effects to America and even the world.

The good: You’ve got Christian Bale playing the lead role of Dick Cheney with Amy Adams as his wife; these two have already proven excellent chemistry in American Hustle (2013). The film also stars Sam Rockwell as President George W. Bush, with Steve Carrel playing Donald Rumsfeld. The movie delves deep in the details of how Dick Cheney assumed great power unusual to a vice-president, with director and writer Adam McKay proving his worth in similar films with The Big Short (2015).

The bad: Anticipation for this movie is incredible, and this may be precisely what puts off viewers. While most reviews are positive, there are some that feel this movie falls a bit short or fails to be unbiased.

Time Freak

What’s it about? Boy meets girl, girl breaks up with boy, boy decides to invent time machine so he can stay with girl. That’s pretty much the story of how a genius teenage boy goes all out in trying to keep his girlfriend.

The good: The plot is definitely interesting, and makes room for tons of comedy scenes and captivating cinematic moments. The film stars Sophie Turner, Asa Butterfield, and Skyler Gisondo, a trio that does well in creating a whimsical rom-com flick.

The bad: Unavoidably, the film will be full of clichés, and may find itself borrowing parts from movies such as Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) and Groundhog Day (1993).

Escape Room

What’s it about? A group of strangers are invited to an Escape Room and are promised one million dollars if they could escape. Who would turn that down? The only problem is, they didn’t know that if they don’t, they will die.

The good: The plot promises a ton of excitement and thrill as you follow the strangers in their quest for survival. Positive ratings rave over the suspense of this horror flick.

The bad: Ratings are, of course, divisive for this one, and some complain about how much it feels like a derivative of movies such as Cube (1993) or the Saw franchise (2004 – 2010).
