The weekend is almost here! Put away the work-related stress and head to a movie theatre near you, especially as this week sees the release of the long-awaited Lion King re-make. Here’s everything you need to know about this week’s hottest film releases:

Lying and Stealing

What’s it about? Ivan (Theo James) is a gifted and discerning art thief who wants out. Elyse (Emily Ratajkowski) is an aspiring actress whose own past transgressions in Hollywood haunt her, as well as a mountain of debt. These two outsiders are drawn to each other.

The good: Preliminary critics argue that screenwriters, Aselton and Adam Nagata, manage to balance several genres; comedy, romance, and thriller.

The bad: Emily Ratajkowski has never been one to receive great praise as an actor.

Step Up: Year of the Dance

What’s about it? Youth from different social classes in Beijing come together to form China’s best dance crew and learn what it really means to be family.

The good: This film is truly culturally diverse.

The bad: Critics are raving over this movie; however, heightened expectations may lead to disappointing results.

The Lion King

What’s about it? After the murder of his father Mufasa (voiced by James Earl Jones), at the hands of his uncle Scar (voiced by Chiwetel Ejiofor), a young lion prince – Simba (voiced by Donald Glover) – flees his kingdom only to learn the true meaning of responsibility and bravery.

The good: Critics are raving over the sheer realism of the film’s animation.

The bad: Some critics and viewers are arguing that the hyper-realistic animation takes away all of the fantasy from Disney’s animated classic.
