This week, Cairo cinemas see two new releases, each of which is thrilling in a very distinct way. There’s an action-packed addition to the Fast & Furious franchise, as well as the film The Convent: a movie filled with horror, thrill, and mystery.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

What’s it about? Lawman Luke Hobbs (Dwyane Johnson) and outcast Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) form an unlikely alliance when a cyber-genetically enhanced villain threatens the future of humanity.

The good: This might be the closure that Fast & Furious fans are looking for.

The bad: The script seems to pretend like past occurrences never happened.

The Convent

What’s it about? In early the 17th century, innocent young Persephone (Hannah Arterton) is falsely accused and faces trial; a guilty verdict will lead to her death. Her fate seems sealed, until the intervention of the mysterious Reverend Mother (Clare Higgins). The Mother is the self-appointed leader of a small religious retreat. Upon arrival, Persephone gets scared and traumatised with visions.

The good: The film seems well made and is saturated with a spooky 17th-century atmosphere.

The bad: Like most movies of the genre, you find yourself wishing it were better, more horrific, more despairing, and, most importantly, more original.
