On the Mat: Yoga, Reiki & Meditation Studio in Zamalek

Something very new has just
opened on the island of Zamalek. It’s cosy, it’s friendly, it’s hidden and if
you don’t know it you will never discover it. If you’re lazy and in need of a
workout but don’t want to bulk up, On the Mat is what you’re looking for. This
yoga, reiki and meditation studio is a tiny, welcoming space that makes you feel instantly
at home and stress-free.

Round the corner from Mandarine
Koueider
on Shagaret El Dor Street, the studio is inconspicuously located on the first
floor of an old building without any outdoor signage. After a hearty welcome,
you will be asked to take off your shoes and put them in the first room on your
left. This is the reiki room where the walls are painted a very light and
relaxing lilac, which is used throughout the rest of the studio.

The main room can
comfortably fit up to fourteen people, ensuring that everyone has enough
space to move and breathe properly. The second room on your left is the
reception, which is decorated with cushions and candles. On the other side of
the studio are the toilets and the women’s dressing room.

Once in the studio, there are
some simple rules to follow: keep your voices low, switch off all electronic
devices, do not wear strong perfume, and help out after the class. You should
also tell the instructors if you have specific injuries so that they can advise
you on which postures to avoid. All the instructors are certified, have travelled
to India and follow a healthy and natural lifestyle. They pay attention to
everyone’s postures and, if necessary, will correct your yoga positions and
ease you into a deeper stretch.

If you are not a yoga fan, On
the Mat Studio also offers a range of other mental and physical activities,
such as tai chi, described as ‘meditation in motion’, pilates, and meditation. For
the month of October, two workshops are already planned and more will
follow. The schedule changes every month but the operating hours suit any kind
of need.

The first class at On the Mat is
always free of charge. After that, you can either pay 50LE per hour or buy a
ten-lesson package for 400LE (40LE per hour). Every workshop normally lasts
three hours and it can be divided into two parts. The workshop is limited to
ten people and costs 200LE. If you want to attend these workshops, you’d better
book your place well in advance. On the Mat Studio has just opened but already
has a Facebook page where you can check all the coming events and keep up-to-date.

360 Tip

Make sure you arrive 10-15 minutes before the class to ensure you have a place. On The Mat provides yoga mats, but feel free to bring your own.

Best Bit

Another quality yoga studio in Cairo!

Worst Bit

The small yoga room may feel cramped when you roll out the long yoga mats.
