If there was ever any doubt about the worldwide popularity of Indian cuisine, just remember that it has been widely accepted as the most popular type of food in the UK, for the last decade – ahead of fish and chips, for example. While Egypt’s love of Indian food might not be quite enough to top local favourites, the state of the Cairo’s Indian dining scene isn’t to be scoffed at.

Rich is possibly the best word to describe Indian cuisine and there are actually quite a few Indian restaurants in the capital; but only a select few stand above the rest as the best in the capital – only a select few are 2016 Cairo 360 Editors’ Choice Award winners.

Begum

Maadi’s restaurant scene is possibly the most eclectic in the city, making Begum’s steady standing as one of the best Indian restaurants all the more commendable. Like its Zamalek-located sister venue, Nawab, there’s a simplicity about Begum that makes their food all the more surprising, delicious and authentic.

Indira

Though the Holiday Inn Cairo Citystars isn’t the trendiest hotel in Egypt’s capital, it happens to be home to one of the best high-end Indian restaurants in the city. Indira bares all the trademarks of a hotel restaurant – it’s chic, elegant and sophisticated – but retains the homely and wholesome nature of Indian food that we all love so much.

Maharaja

Ramses Hilton’s Maharaja forsakes the kitsch that many other Indian restaurants readily embrace in an attempt at fostering an atmosphere, instead focusing on producing fresh, rich food. The tandoori station is a nice touch, while the food itself is simple and clean but typically big on flavour.

Maharani

The second Maadi-located Indian restaurant to win an award, Maharani – not to be mistaken for its Downtown namesake – hits all the right notes, thanks to its excellently made dishes. The slightly over-the-top will either slightly irk you or delight you depending on which side of the fence you sit on, but Maharani delivers where it matters.

Nawab

A legend in Zamalek, Nawab is the go-to for many fans of Indian cuisine. While the portions are as generous as you’ll get, the quantity in no way compromises the quality. Throw in the fact that its prices are reasonable and you get plenty of bang for your buck and you have the dining trifecta – good food and plenty of it at prices affordable enough that you can guiltlessly eat it at every chance.
