Bubblicious: Zamalek’s Laid Back Eatery Still Standing Strong

Big fancy restaurants pop up around Cairo at an alarming rate, but some days all you need is some place cozy where you can enjoy good food in a quiet peaceful atmosphere. This is where Bubblicious steps in.

This small venue in Zamalek has just a few tables with charming little white chairs and an open kitchen where you can witness your food being prepared before you.

The breakfast menu holds an impressive selection of omelettes, fava beans, pancakes, and sweet and savoury waffles, while the lunch menu boasts several pasta, pizza and sandwich options. The signature item, the one that inspired the venue’s name, is the bubble tea; which comes in different flavours including green tea, fruit-flavoured black tea or tea with milk, to which your choice of Tapioca Pearls or Popping Bobas can be added.

We opted for Green Tea with Blueberry & Cherry Popping Bobas (27 LE). While the drink was cold and refreshing, we found the popping gummy balls to be unpleasantly weird.

From the breakfast menu we opted for the Mexican Omelette (29LE) and the Tunisian Shakshuka (25LE). Shortly afterwards, our orders were laid before us.

The Mexican Omelette featured one large tortilla stuffed with scrambled eggs, smoked beef, Mexican chilli sauce, chilli pepper, onions and cheddar cheese. Despite being flavoursome, the wrap wasn’t held together and far too messy.

The Tunisian Shakshuka, however, had an interestingly unique amalgamation of flavours.  Served in a casserole with a side of perfectly toasted brown English Muffins as requested, the Shakshuka featured three sunny side-up eggs in a tomato-based sauce flavoured with paprika, chilli peppers, garlic, onions and parsley.  It was a tad too runny for our taste; nonetheless, the diverse infusion of flavours totally enticed our taste buds.

We had to try their dessert options which looked absolutely divine, so we ordered the Cream Cheese French toast with Blueberry (31LE).

This dish was undoubtedly one of the most tantalizing dishes we’ve ever seen and tasted even better than it looked. It was served as two pieces of French toast generously dipped in egg batter, rendering them thick and juicy. Stuffed with blueberry flavoured cream cheese and drenched in blueberry sauce; needless to say, they were ridiculously delicious.

Although it felt like we were eating inside the kitchen at times, our experience was still rather enjoyable thanks to the generous food portions, excellent service and the laid back atmosphere. Bubblicous is still serving consistently great dishes prepared with high quality ingredients at reasonable prices.
