John Wick Chapter Two: Another Round of Delicious Keanu-Starring Mayhem

It was only a matter of time before John Wick returned to the big screen. After 2014’s eponymous 2014 action sleeper-hit, the ruthlessly skilled assassin who can kill a group of people with nothing but a pencil is back for another round of delicious mayhem in Chad Stahelski’s hyper-violent and feverishly entertaining John Wick: Chapter 2.

Taking place shortly after the events of the first movie, the story once again picks up with the deadly hitman, who after getting his own back on the Russian mob, is now ready to finally settle down.

Unfortunately, his under-the-radar life is short-lived when he is visited by an old business associate, Santino D’Antonio (Scamarcio), with whom he had made a deal with – one that obliges him to help Santino at any time.

Hesitating to step out of his well-deserved retirement, John has no choice but to accept the mission which soon finds him travelling to Rome where he is to eliminate Santino’s sister so that her brother can take her place on the High Table.  However, his plans are soon derailed and after learning about a $7 Million bounty that has been put on his head and an army of assassins have been sent out to get him.

Following the surprise success of its predecessor, John Wick: Chapter 2 delivers on all fronts, with director Chad Stahelski turning up the violence and the stakes with the utmost proficiency and dexterity, while offering plenty of intensity and excitement at every turn.  Opening up the movie with not one but two spectacularly-staged action sequences, it’s relatively easy to get engrossed into the happenings on screen with both the frantic action and the beautiful locations adding to the experience.

Although some parts of it might need a bit more suspension of disbelief than one would like, the story manages to expand on the entire John Wick universe with the second chapter diving deeper into our hero’s world of assassins, murder and other dangers that come with the territory.

Naturally, Reeves is once again the star of the show and it’s hard to imagine anyone else for the part. Fully committing himself to the role at hand, Reeves blends just the right amount of toughness and humor in order to power through. The rest of the cast, including Common and Ruby Rose who play John’s rival hitmen, are unfortunately unmemorable, with maybe the exception of Fishburne who brings just the right amount of humor and theatrics to his role.

All in all, John Wick: Chapter Two is a hit. It’s all relatively loopy and there isn’t a bone of rationality to be found within, but there’s plenty of action and, when done right, you don’t really need much else, right?
