Angie’s Place: All-Day Breakfast Bust

Most residents of Cairo aren’t what you’d call ‘morning people’; but with more and more restaurants adding breakfast sections to their menus and some hosting weekend brunches, going out early to have breakfast/brunch seems to be the new ‘thing’ – which is why we headed over to Angie’s Place to try out its all-day breakfast menu.

We didn’t waste time and we opted for the Stacked Hash Brown (42LE) and the House Special (34LE). Starting with the stacked hash brown, it consists of a layer of hash brown topped with slices of sausage, fried eggs, cheese, green onion and aioli, all served with two pieces of toast. The fried eggs had a fantastic runny yolk and the sausage was cooked well, but there was too much aioli which didn’t have any garlic flavour but still overpowered the rest of the components. The biggest problem, however, was the hash brown – the main star of the dish – which didn’t stand out in anyway, or at least have the crispiness we were looking for, as it was too thin and undercooked.

The House Special also suffered from poor execution. Served with toast and undercooked cubes of roasted potatoes, the omelette supposedly contains basil, oven roasted cherry tomato and fresh mozzarella, but it was dry and unseasoned omelette with overcooked edges. As delicious as this combination might sound, the basil was untraceable, there were only five slices of cherry tomatoes and we didn’t feel the presence of the mozzarella at all.

Moving to desserts, we went with the Crunchy French Toast (42LE). The French toast was coated with crushed corn flakes, which added a great crunch with breakfast flavour vibes that worked perfectly with the fresh strawberries. However, the bread was too thick and the result was a far from custardy and dry centre, w the vanilla bean cream had a runny consistency and tasted bland.

We also tried the Apple Oven Baked Pancakes (48LE). A light and puffy baked pancake was topped with slices of caramelised cinnamon apple with a spot-on texture and a scoop of rich ice cream; sadly the dessert overall needed more sweetness and bolder flavours, while there was too much of egg flavour in the pancakes.

With so many flaws in the dishes which, for a breakfast specialist and an all day breakfast menu we expected a flawless breakfast but Angie’s Place was a letdown. All of the dishes sound delish on paper, but they have a lot of work to do especially that the variety is not that wide. Not-to-mention that the menu doesn’t have eggs Benedict!

360 Tip

Angie's Place also has a special kids' menu.

Best Bit

The idea of an all-day breakfast is something Cairo needs more of

Worst Bit

Lots of small flaws ruined what could have been fantastic dishes.
