Indra Day Spa: Authentic Asian Treatments in Maadi
Published On:
26/06/2012
With the daily stress and pollution we live with in Cairo, one must not forget that just as our body needs to be shaped and toned, it also needs to relax and be pampered. Indra Day Spa, located in Maadi, is an Asian-inspired spa and with their motto ‘a tranquil and relaxing retreat from everyday life’ we couldn’t think of a better place to dust ourselves off in.
The essence of the Far East is felt the moment you step in. The music is exotic and the lighting is dim; running water can be heard from the little fountain at the entrance and the aroma of oils fills the space. The décor is simple with a mostly brown, beige and green colour palette. Though the place is not very big, it's cosy and peaceful.
The receptionist welcomed us and asked us to fill out an application with our contacts and any medical conditions. Meanwhile, they served us hot mint and a little cold towel to refresh and wipe the outside world off with.
The services offered are plenty. Massages are all Asian inspired and are carried out by professional masseuses. The four choices are: a Traditional Malaysian Massage (360LE/60 mins-480LE/90mins); the Indra Aromatherapy Fusion Massage (300LE/60mins-420LE/90mins); a Signature Deep Tissue Massage (300LE/60mins-420LE/90mins); and a Relaxing Foot Massage (260LE/60mins-320LE/90mins).
We decided to try the 60-minute aromatherapy fusion massage session. We were greeted by our masseuse and asked to choose from three different types of oils for the session. Passing the reception, we reached a dim area where a quick foot massage and scrub were given. We immediately felt the stress being relieved.
Entering the massage room, the masseuse gave us a bikini-like outfit in a sealed plastic bag. Though she spoke no English or Arabic we managed to communicate using hand gestures instead. The masseuse knew exactly what she was doing and worked every tense area perfectly; the head massage was the best part but it deserved more time.
After 60 minutes of heaven, we returned outside where the receptionist asked about the experience and in turn, we left a note in their guest book sharing what we thought.
There are plenty of other services offered by the spa. You can pamper yourself with one of the natural facials (250LE/60mins) or try one of their ‘body polishes’ which are offered at 290LE for a 45-minute session. Essentially a body scrub, they come in different choices such as Coconut and Vanilla Body Treatment or the Energizing Ginger Salt Scrub.
Another body treatment is the ‘body senses’ (370LE/60min). Pastes and body wraps made from natural ingredients brought directly from Asia are used where the treatment exfoliates, hydrates, balances or improves blood circulation.
Last but not least are the rituals. The Immersion Rituals (150LE/30mins) will soak your problems away either in the Rose Blossom & Honey bath which is inspired by Cleopatra’s milk bath, or the Tropical Bath with essences of jasmine, sandalwood and rose.
Each treatment has a philosophy behind it and is based on professional standards. All ingredients are natural, authentic and from Asia. Make sure you understand each treatment and choose the one suitable for you. Don't forget to book an appointment online or by a call a few days ahead.

Recently opened in
the Sakanat El Maadi neighbourhood near Maadi Grand Mall in Cairo, Diva 3 is a
luxurious gem of a beauty salon in an area that desperately needs it. Following
in the footsteps of Pace e Luce, Diva 3 offers a similarly glamorous, but more
low-key and affordable salon experience. Located on the ground
floor of a commercial building, the salon is elegantly presented with
glass-panelled windows, sleek black furniture, chic glass coffee tables and
impressive hair stations featuring mini-flat-screen TVs playing Fashion TV.
Flattering lighting, comfortable styling and hair-washing chairs add to the
overall experience at Diva. The staff is professional
and welcoming, offering refreshments and responding helpfully to customer
requests for reading material, although said reading material left much to be
desired, with the English magazines on offer consisting of telecom industry
trade magazines and a publication about yachts. Arabic magazines were better,
with a good stock of the usual women's and gossip magazines. Stylists are clearly
intelligent and well-trained; a request for a complicated signature style was
received enthusiastically and executed flawlessly. A wash and blow dry will set
you back a pricey 70LE; but unlike some other overpriced salons, the result is
excellent and lasting. While the price is steep, the atmosphere and
quality of the service might be worth it. Other services at Diva 3
include hair cutting (80LE) and colouring (250LE and up), manicures (50LE) and
pedicures (60LE), waxing (40LE and up) and threading (15LE and up).
Manicures and pedicures can be conducted at your salon chair if you are getting
your hair styled, or in the comfort of a private spa area at the back of the
salon. The spa area, like
the rest of the salon, is impeccably clean – no need to bring your own
nail set here – and is staffed by very competent, helpful and attentive technicians. Although it’s a very
high-end salon, Diva 3 lacks the snobbish atmosphere of some of the big-name
salons in Cairo. It feels like your humble neighbourhood salon; but cleaner,
more comfortable and a little bit more expensive. For regular salon visits or a
special occasion splurge, Diva 3 stands out from the crowd of Maadi hair and
beauty salons, and definitely merits a visit.

What is it about haircuts that even the thought of going feels like a gruelling task in Cairo? It’s never been a simple one for us, as anxiety and indecision seem to tag along like the plague. We’re thankful to say that we’ve found a place that not only puts us at ease but fills the experience with enjoyment and satisfaction each and every time.
Tree-lined and with an inconspicuous stone sign, La Villa No. 36 is easy to pass on by. If you look up though, you’ll notice the sprawling two-story pink villa popping out from behind the foliage. Enter through the gate, follow the pathway and you’ll find yourself in a haven of relaxation within a matter of minutes.
The staff at La Villa is as friendly and professional as they come. After signing in, you’ll go on to be dressed in a clean, white robe and offered a variety of beverages including tea and juice.
La Villa’s design is boast-worthy; punches of colour are found in the tiniest of details, 1960’s themed screen prints line the walls and last but not least, the workrooms are beautifully serene and spacious. Continuing with the brightly coloured theme is a large, circular hot pink couch for those waiting. Alternatively, you can have a seat on one of their balconies nestled among the trees – watch out, though, as the cosy chairs with deep cushions have a tendency to suck you right in.
In terms of services and price, La Villa’s menu is on par with others around town, although running short on massage services. A Thai masseuse comes only once or twice a week, depending on the schedule. Massages start at 250LE and are available just for women, unfortunately.
What La Villa is best at, though, is taking care of your treasured locks and a mighty fine job they do. Household names for many, the French duo Paul and Christophe have always treated hair with the upmost care and precision - though Cristophe has sadly departed. The staff listen to their clients’ desires but don’t stay quiet about what would suit the individual best, paying attention to facial and body structure as they do so.
Other stylists are also available including the talented Ehab. With a sense of humour and dance moves in tow, the entertainment is always appreciated. Haircuts begin at 150LE, including a shampoo, sleep-inducing head massage and blow-dry.
Hair removal, manicures and pedicures are also available. For 30LE and 40LE, the nail treatments are thorough, taking care of hangnails, tough cuticles and any other pesky nail problems that one might have. High quality OPI nail polish is used and a topcoat always offered to ensure a long-lasting paintjob.
When all is said and done, La villa is where it’s at. From their great customer service to the lively atmosphere and reasonable prices, it’s no wonder they stay busy and are sometimes booked for weeks in advance. Walk-ins are available but we recommend calling ahead.
