There's a palpable intensity in the air as June 30th draws closer; electricity cuts, lack of petrol and last night's powerhouse of a presidential speech have got the juices of all Cairenes flowing. There's not much to do at this point than wait for Sunday with hope and anticipation of better things to come. In the meantime, though, here are a couple of cultural and artistic events that prove that whatever happens, Egypt will always be awesome.
Thursday sees Egyptian experimental musician, Object Obscure, otherwise known as Samir Nabil, performing at Medrar to a backdrop of video art from Alexandrian filmmakers. Cairo Jazz Club is keeping it relatively chilled with live musical performances by Like Jelly and Wust El Balad, while Al Mawlaweya Al Masreya will be at El Sawy Culturewheel.
Looking for some laughter therapy? El Sawy Culturewheel will also be hosting a stand-up comedy show this evening. Elsewhere, at the Italian Cultural Institute, 'L'arrivo di wang' – a story about a mysterious interrogation – will be screened.
Friday offers more giggles with 'Gom3et El 'Asab' taking place at Beit El Raseef, which invites all aspiring comedians to take to the stage. Meanwhile, popular Lebanese band, Mashrou' Leila are live at El Sawy Culturewheel.
Elsewhere, Dina's Hostel will be screening 'Tahrir Monologues', which is a collection of stories and testimonies from the revolution's original eighteen days, while another screening takes place at Sufi; narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, the documentary 'Earthlings' shows the horrors of modern man's use of animals.
Start your Saturday at Nūn Center at the weekly Farmers Market, or take your little ones to an afternoon of storytelling and arts and crafts with Kids Read at Diwan Heliopolis. Later in the evening, head to Wikalet El Ghouri for El Ghouri Tannoura Dance Group's unique performance, or check out live music by Karakeeb and Basheer at Cairo Jazz Club.
